Shelter Spotlight: Motley Zoo Animal Rescue!
This year’s Shelter Spotlight event focused on the work of Motley Zoo Animal Rescue (Motley Zoo) located in Redmond, WA and why they do what they do. Motley Zoo was chosen by us due to their focus on helping homeless pets in Washington and because of their admirable work and dedication to taking in animals with behavioral needs, emotional needs, medical issues and medically susceptible animals (example, pregnant dogs, nursing mums, senior dogs). These cases are much more challenging, and their maintenance can be costly.
They are a foster-based organization of about 150 fosters and work with potential adoptees as individuals to match them with the right animal. Their process is a personal one because they try to build a relationship with the adoptees to ensure compatibility. To them, adoption is not merely a transaction.
Adopting from Motley Zoo takes some time as they access compatibility because their goal is to match the individual with the right pet. They get their animals mainly from overflowing shelters in WA state, and from individuals who have a specific need that can't be addressed at the shelters. That’s when Motley Zoo steps in and provide a lending hand.
Motley Zoo takes in about 30% special/medical needs, more than behavioral, and typically have about 50 – 100 animals at any given time. They can only take in animals that fosters can handle so large, aggressive dogs are not something they can do. However, they do offer support in terms of suggestions and training.
Another factor that is unique with Motley Zoo, is that part of their operation includes a dog daycare and training studio where they dub these services their “Year-Round” fundraising program which helps them support their rescue animals and the $15,000 per month vet bills that they incur.
They provide “Rockstar Treatment” for their doggy daycare clients and for every day that their client’s pups come in for this treatment, the daily fee goes towards the cost of the rescue care. Their charity run dog daycare is the first of its kind in the country.
Despite the high cost of maintenance, they continue to take in hard-to-adopt homeless pets, a Pawsitive Alliance’s motto as well, so that no pets will be left behind.
For this year's Spotlight, we introduced Ryan Reynolds, Joey King, Carole Bradshaw and Sunspot, all totally adorable and utterly adoptable from Motley Zoo.

For this year's Spotlight, we introduced Ryan Reynolds, Joey King, Carole Bradshaw and Sunspot, all totally adorable and utterly adoptable from Motley Zoo.
Ryan Reynolds, is a 2-year-old Labrador retriever & Australian shepherd mix, who had a tough start to life. When young, his mum shook him leaving him with a physical injury akin to “baby shaken syndrome.” Due to that incident, he walks fine, but not in a straight line. It's this special walk though that makes him so unique. It doesn't slow him down and he doesn't feel any different than other dogs.
Ryan has a certain way of doing things, which makes him special. He loves to cuddle but not too long or he'll panic. He lacks depth perception, so he will lick you on your nose, then may go in and kiss your ear next or he'll try to take aim again, and plant a smackeroo on your lips instead! We know, he is just adorable that way! |
Joey King, is a 2-year-olds cute little bob-tail kitty. She’s the cutest thing ever, but due to having mega-esophagus she needs to eat at a special food stand. Mesa-esophagus sounds worse than it really is. If she doesn’t eat standing upright, she risks regurgitating food. Most people are afraid of adopting kitties like her because they may think feeding her is too complicated.
Well, we’re here to bust that myth! Nothing could be further than the truth. Feeding Joey is a piece of cake. She hops onto the food stand and eats right out of her bowl. She doesn’t even need to be strapped on as some other devices require. All you need to do us to put the food into her bowl, like you would for any other dog or cat. Step back and let her do her thing. |

Carole Bradshaw, is a 2-year-old Husky & Collie mix. What's unique about her is that when the sun rises, she will “crow” like a rooster and help wake you up. She’s cute that way.
For having a valgus deformity on her right front leg, she's a pretty good walker and will keep up with the best of you. She can even take moderate hikes with you, just keep off the more strenuous ones. So, if you’re a walker yourself, she’ll be the perfect companion for you. |
Finally, cute little Sunspot Stopwatch, who’s almost one year-old in August. The first thing you’ll notice about him is he’s a black and white bob-tailed kitty who’s playful and loves to be with other kitties. So, his new adopters would need to have another cat with them so that Sunspot Stopwatch can have a kitty-friend.
He also does well with dogs, so a home with other dogs would be welcomed. You may need to coax him out of his shyness, but once he feels your warm hands under his chin, he will "dig" his head into your palm happily! Note: Sunspot Stopwatch is the black and white kitty in the video. |
