We envision a healthy and happy life for each cat and dog in Washington. However, many pets become lost and come into shelters across our state as strays. They disappear and their families are heartbroken, not knowing where their beloved pets are.
In Yakima County, over 5,000 cats and dogs come into the shelter as strays each year, which is 92% of the animals in that one shelter; statewide the average is 50% of animals entering shelters are stray.
Pawsitive Alliance has pulled together a coalition of animal welfare organizations to tackle this issue through our new initiative, Project Mission Pawsible. Through Project Mission Pawsible, we are initiating a comprehensive program in Yakima County focused on solutions to reduce the number of animals who become lost, and if they are lost, improve their chances of being reunited with their family. This program starts with getting collars and tags on thousands of cats and dogs by providing free tags and collars to community members and ensuring every adopted animal now leaves the shelter with a collar and ID tag.
In addition to increasing the number of pets with ID, we will be working on improvements to the lost and found system; increasing spay and neuter, so animals are less likely to roam; and giving people tools to get them reunited with their pets quickly if they become separated. We will also continue to focus on building a happy and healthy experience for pets and their families to support a life long bond through our Pet Retention Program, where we provide assistance and support to families adopting at our adoption events.
We are always looking for new and gently used collars and leashes for both dogs and cats. Contact info@pawsitivealliance.org, if you would like to donate.
