Our Programs
Pawsitive Alliance offers the following programs and services to Washington rescue and shelter organizations and to the public to increase adoptions, spay and neuter surgeries and educational services to help bring an end to pet euthanasia in Washington State.
Adoptathon Coordinator and Support
Pawsitive Alliance coordinates animal adoption events that bring multiple animal shelter agencies from across the state under one roof.
We also provide assistance in helping businesses, individuals or animal shelters in hosting events. If you are thinking about organizing an event and would like help, please contact us at info@pawsitivealliance.org.
At these events the shelters' animals have an opportunity to be seen by the public outside of the shelter. This gives them additional exposure outside of the shelter environment.
Participating organizations range in size from shelters with thousands of animals passing through their doors each year to organized groups helping animals under the roof of their own home. We've helped shelters from across the state saving hundreds of dogs and cats.
Visit the events page to read the stories from past events.
We are honored that Pawsitive Alliance’s recent spring adoption event was featured in a video created by Healthy Paws Foundation. The goal of Healthy Paws Foundation is to engage, through local animal adoption groups, over 15 million pet advocates and help them speak up and take action to help more homeless pets get adopted.

Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.) of Yakima
Pawsitive Alliance is actively working with (S.N.A.P.) of Yakima County, a coalition of animal rescues, animal control and the Yakama Tribal Nation. We came to the table with the shared concern of the high numbers of unwanted litters of dogs being born in the county.
In 2005 we formed S.N.A.P. through a grant and started offering FREE spay and neuter surgery assistance for residents of Yakima County.
With our first $10,000 we were able to assist over 80 animals and their families who were eager to have their animals altered but just couldn't afford the service. To date we have received four additional grants and contributions from individuals to keep this important program going.
To donate today to help support this successful program please visit the Humane Society of Central Washington's website. Thank you for making a difference.
If you are a resident of Yakima County and need spay/neuter assistance please visit the Humane Society of Central Washington's website for information.

Fix-A-Pit Program for Puget Sound Region
Pawsitive Alliance offers FREE spay and neuter surgery assistance to residents of the Puget Sound Region for pit bulls and pit bull mixes.
Program objective
We are facing a crisis in that over 1/3 of the dogs entering Washington's shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes; most of these dogs will never find a home because of the sheer numbers coming through shelter doors. Our goal is to get at the root of the problem by providing spay/neuter resources to prevent unplanned and unwanted litters; for this reason we started "Fix a Pit".
These dogs are not the monsters the media hype makes them out to be. Most are loyal, loving family members. Some are victims of their irresponsible owners. One of the best ways to address the public safety issue is through spay/neuter; unaltered dogs, of any breed, are responsible for the most serious dog bites.
To address the high euthanasia numbers of pit bulls in our shelters is crucial, no matter how you feel about the breed. We believe compassion should be extended to all animals regardless of size, shape, color or breed.
Free Spay/Neuter Surgeries For Pit Bulls through the Seattle Humane Society
The Seattle Humane Society and PetSmart Charities are joining forces to provide FREE spay and neuter surgeries to pit bulls and pit bull mixes in King County . The dogs will also receive free vaccinations, and microchips will be available for $5.
If you have an unaltered pit bull, or know someone who does, call the Seattle Humane Society at (425) 649-7560 today to make an appointment.

Sponsor a Spay/Neuter
You can help spay and neuter pit bulls in the Puget Sound Region of Washington and reduce the high numbers being relinquished and euthanized in our shelters. Sponsor a spay or neuter surgery today for only $25.00 and start helping immediately!
Your sponsorship will enable us to offer free spay and neuter services for pit bulls whose owners could not otherwise afford to have the surgery done. This will help prevent unwanted litters being born and turned in to animal shelters. Pit bulls currently make up the highest number of any breed euthanized today in our shelters. Sponsor a spay or neuter today and in return you receive a Certificate of Sponsorship from Pawsitive Alliance and more importantly, you will know that you are helping reduce the number of unwanted pit bulls in our communities.
Our mission is to end the killing of homeless dogs and cats. We need the help of the community to make this happen. Make a donation and 100% goes directly to spay/neuter surgeries.

Valley Animal Partners (VAP) - Snoqualmie Valley Spay/Neuter Fund
Valley Animal Partners (VAP) is a group of local businesses and individuals in the Snoqualmie Valley interested in the welfare of locally owned pets.
With the ever-increasing costs of veterinary care, many pets in do not receive the medical attention they need -- especially spay & neuter services.
VAP's mission is to raise funds to help Snoqualmie Valley seniors, veterans and families with limited income spay or neuter their pets. VAP raises these funds by hosting two fundraisers a year usually in February and October.
VAP partner Pawsitive Alliance oversees the spay and neuter fund for qualifying pet owners in North Bend, Snoqualmie and Fall City . Pet owners in need of assistance can fill out an application for eligibility and will be able to take their pet to a participating veterinarian for care. Since the fund was created, over 50 dogs and cats have been fixed through VAP.
If you would like to join VAP, donate, act as an event sponsor or volunteer, please send an email to Andrea at andrea@pawsitivealliance.org. Together we can make difference in the lives of pets in the Snoqualmie Valley!

The Responsi-Bull Project
Pawsitive Alliance is working with BullsEye Dog Rescue, Coalition: HUMAnE Spay and Neuter, and Positive Approach Dog Training to present the "The Responsi-Bull Project" in Pierce County . This is a three part program, including free spay and neuter, responsible pit bull ownership workshop and obedience classes. This approach is crucial in addressing the pit bull overpopulation crisis as well as the misconceptions which plague these breeds.
If you have a pit bull (or pit mix) and are need of assistance email us today at andrea@pawsitivealliance.org to find out when the next series begins.
-
Part I: Pit-Fix
Owners of pit bulls and pit bull mixes have their dogs spayed or neutered free of charge.
-
Part II: Pit-Ed
Pit bull owners who attend this workshop learn the tools to be great dog owners. They are given the tools they need to educate the public about their dogs, learn some of the basics in dog owner best practices, are instructed on the current and past breed history, plus are taught about the many ways they can provide their dogs with a positive outlet for their energy through therapy, agility, and training.
-
Part III: Train-A-Pit
The four-week basic obedience class for pit bulls is free to those who completed the Pit-Ed workshop.
The transformation of these dogs and their owners is an incredible sight, and we know sending them out into the public eye will affect the lives of others in a positive way. Having well-trained dogs and responsible, prepared owners will help to reduce the impact on our community since behavior is the number one reason dogs are turned into shelters.
Here is feedback from one attendee:
"Thank you very much for all that you and your staff have done to help us be better parents to Bella. She is a really good dog and we want to show our friends and the public in general that even though she looks a little intimidating that she poses no more a threat to anyone than any other animal. Thanks again for letting us bully breed owners get together and learn some basic information and helping me also with some self-esteem to not be scared to take my bully breed for walks."
Thank you to our generous grantmakers and sponsors that make this program possible!
Why does Pawsitive Alliance advocate for pit bull breeds?
We are facing a crisis in that over one-third of the dogs entering Washington's shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Most of these dogs will never find a home because of the sheer numbers coming through shelter doors. Our goal is to get at the root of the problem by providing spay/neuter resources to prevent unplanned and unwanted litters; for this reason we started "Fix a Pit". We are also proud to be a partner in the Responsi-Bull project focusing on spay/neuter for pit bulls and education and training for their owners. We are grateful to the Dugan Foundation for recently awarding us $2,000 to help fix pit bulls in Pierce County through these two programs.
Our next series of the Responsi-Bull program (free spay/neuter and obedience training) begins on May 1st. Please click here for more information.
Did you know that the American Pit Bull Terrier was the most popular family dog during the first part of the 20th century? The pit bull breeds are now the most persecuted dogs in history. They are misrepresented by the media, feared by the public and discriminated against by landlords and insurance companies. Every day these dogs loose their lives because of this discrimination. Most pit bull breeds and mixes are loyal, loving family members. But sadly some are the victims of their irresponsible owners. History has shown that breed bans do not work. One of the best ways to address the public safety issue is through spay/neuter; unaltered dogs, of any breed, are responsible for the most serious dog bites.
To address the high euthanasia numbers of pit bulls in our shelters is crucial and we believe compassion should be extended to all companion animals regardless of size, shape, color or breed.
How can you help us?
- Make a donation to support these programs to support spay/neuter and education.
- Educate yourself on these issues and help us advocate for these wonderful dogs. We can't turn the tide on this crisis without your help.
- Contact Andrea at andrea@pawsitivealliance.org to help with flyering in the Tacoma area in April for the next Responsi-Bull series.

Education Workshops
We sponsor Dog Ownership Basics Workshops. These workshops focus on helping families identify how to pick out a dog that is right for their family and lifestyle focusing on characteristics such as activity level, grooming and training needs. Workshops also cover topics including the responsibilities of owning a dog along with training and behavioral problem tips. Event attendees are better able to make knowledgeable decisions when adding a new dog or puppy to their family. Attendees receive a certificate for early admission to a following Pawsitive Alliance hosted adoption event.
Behavioral problems are one of the top reasons people turn their dogs into shelters. Most of the time, these behavioral issues can be fixed. These workshops assist families in finding the right match for their family and learn about the responsibility of adding a dog or puppy to the household. Helping families find the right match in the first place and giving them the tools to work on behavioral problems, reduces the number of animals being relinquished to shelters for behavioral issues. Choosing the right dog for your family and having reasonable expectations is the key in finding a lifetime family companion.
