Pet Food Tax Aimed at Cutting Euthanasia Rate

On January 27, 2010, King 5 News ran a news story about House Bill 1406 and Senate Bill 5329, bills in our state legislation that would raise funds to subsidize spaying and neutering for low income pet owners. The news story featured Andrea Logan of Pawsitive Alliance (and her dog, Kenai) explaining why this legislation is a cost-effective and humane solution to the pet overpopulation crisis in Washington state.

Spay/Neuter Bill Would Save Lives, Money, and Improve Public Safety

Throughout Washington, people do kind things every day to help the dogs and cats in our lives. They may be employees or volunteers of an animal shelter, rescue organization, or veterinary clinic. Many work quietly on their own, spending their time and money doing what they can to care for abandoned, neglected, and abused companion animals.

Despite the efforts of so many caring people, our state is facing a crisis: Tens of thousands of dogs and cats are killed in our shelters each year simply because there are not enough homes to place them in. That is precisely why bills in our state legislature-Senate Bill 5329 and its companion House Bill 1406-are urgently needed.

Help Save Washington’s Dogs and Cats
The bill proposing a state-wide spay/neuter program is currently stalled in the Senate Agriculture Committee. Although many legislators have been in favor of the program, they were faced with a historic budget crisis and were reluctant to approve any new programs this year. We will continue advocating for state-wide spay-neuter in 2010. We need your help in passing this important bill. Learn more by visiting the Save Washington Pets website: www.savewashingtonpets.org.

The legislation was featured in the editorial section of the Seattle PI. To read the editorial please click here: article from the Seattle Post Intelligencer. To read an interview with Pawsitive Alliance founder, Andrea Logan, about this important legislation, please check out this article on The Bark.com.
